Eight European IT organizations, including Arsys, Bit, Gdańsk University of Technology, Infobip, Ionos, Pravragon, Mondragon Corporation and Octawave, launched virtu8ra, Multi-Sosa providers Edge Cloud designed for Europe.
Initiative led by Openernbula Systems, an open source company company intends to create a flexible infrastructure that connects Maya cloud providers. Initial introduction includes six EU Member States: Croatia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia and Spain.
Falling under an important project of common European interest in cloud infrastructure and new generation services (Ipcei-CIS). This initiative approved by the European Commission includes 12 EU Member States and more than EUR 3 billion to finance public and private resources.
The core of the project is open-source software for virtualization, developed by a network of more than 30 European companies. Emphasis is placed on creating a framework of a neutral supplier adapted for management of increasing integration of cloud and marginal calculations known as a cloud continuum.
Solution of European Cloud Challenges
The aim of the Virtu8ra is to solve the urgent European digital environment: dependence on large, non -European cloud providers. The infrastructure is designed to control the anger of distributed computing services, from 5G cells to data centers. This makes them mainly applications where low latency is important, such as intelligent dictations, connected vehicles, remote surgery and fire management.
The open-source alternative to the large, proprietary cloud helps Virt8ra EU business, and the minimis of their reliance on hyperscalers and large technology sellers and promotes European pressure on greater technological sovereignty.
Function and future development
The initial version of the virtu8ra already shows the key capacity. One control plane allows users to manage physical sources, virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters across the cloud. The infrastructure has been developed with an emphasis on portability, deployment of applications to be deployed and migrated between different rental.
The project is far from static. There are plans to expand the range of the system, include additional rent and added functions designed for the use of a new generation that are based on AI -based AI. The purpose of planned progress is to satisfy the needs of European business in a complex digital environment.
Barriers on the current cloud market
Despite the potential of initiatives such as Virta8ra, the European cloud market still faces challenges. Customers often fight high costs such as data leaks and lack of interoperability among providers. Migration procedures can also be cumbersome, making it difficult to switch services.
The EU data law, which is about to enter in September 2025, aims to solve them from promoting the transitions of spirit between cloud providers and edges. The Virt8ra is in line with this legislation and offers a technology magazine with an open source code designed to make the transition smoother.
According to Ignacio M. Llorente, CEO of Openenbul Systems, Virtu8ra represents a significant step in transforming the European cloud landscape. “Testing Virt8ra testing is a turning point in the way the EU champions come to rectify the EU cloud market. We will build a sovereign cloud continuum based on the neutrality of sellers and the European Open Source, ”he said.
